The Libby Mine Tragedy

This video tells the true story of a small U.S. mining town, Libby, which, at one point in time, was producing up to 80% of the world's supply of a certain mineral, Vermiculite. Unfortunately, despite the mineral's possible dangers being known by the mining company who was operating the town's mine, the information was not passed on to those working there, or their families.

It was discovered that the vermiculite in the mine contained asbestos, a severely dangerous substance that causes cancer and lung problems. Hundreds of people lost their lives to asbestos exposure, many of them miners, but also others who simply lived in the Libby.

The area was investigated by the Environmental Protection Agency, who then launched a cleanup mission to bring down the dangerous levels of asbestos. The project was a success, but is still ongoing, with questions still being asked as to whether Libby will every truly be a safe place to live again.

The mining company who operated at the Libby site, as well as the state of Montana itself, have been recipients of countless lawsuits from those affected by asbestos exposure.
