How did you create a life that you could sit here? asked Lisa to her.
"I didn't really create it, I mean I when people sat what did you do to make it happen, the only two people that I could say we're responsible for me being able to have the singing career that I had Rodgers and Hammerstein, I could sing I thought everybody come to sing. It was a natural talent for me , I performed in high school did all of that but thought everybody could do that and I wanted to be a vet because I was an only child. And I raised everything from you know skunks to birds to snake to your name. I had worked in Pittsburgh and sang there. Rodgers and Hammerstein's having open auditions for anybody that wants to sing for them" replied Shirley Jones.

Named after child star Shirley Temple, Shirley Jones started singing at the age of six. She started formal training at the age of 12 and would dream of singing with her idol, Gordon MacRae. Upon graduating from high school, Shirley went to New York to audition for the casting director of Rodgers & Hammerstein. Taken by Shirley's beautifully trained voice, Shirley was signed as a nurse in the Broadway production of "South Pacific.

Today's Featured Legacy Leader: Shirley Jones

It was so incredible meeting Shirley Jones! She is truly an Icon. She was born in 1934, won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for playing a vengeful prostitute in Elmer Gantry (1960). My personal favorite was her role in the hit 70’s show, The Partridge Family! The success of that show would do more for her stepson, teen idol David Cassidy. The show still plays in reruns.
