What is the best amplifier for magicians, clowns, performers, and musicians?
I spent over a year researching all the best portable amplifiers for performers.
After testing lots of amps and talking to a lot of sound professionals I chose the Roland - CUBE Street EX.
I am going to give you five things I was looking for and why I chose this amp.
I don’t make any money from this video.
I am focused on voice amplification and background music.
I was not specifically looking for an amplifier for an instrument.
But in my research, I did find that this is one of the most popular amps for busking musicians.
Here are the five things I was looking for.
1 Battery Powered
One of the most important features I was looking for was a battery powered amp.
The Roland - CUBE Street EX can be plugged into an outlet if plug-in power is readily available
But what makes it a winner for me is that it can run on full power with eight AA batteries.
I use rechargeable batteries and make sure I have a full charge at the beginning of the day.
I regularly use the Roland - CUBE Street EX for four hours or more on one charge.
To be fair, if you always have an outlet to plug into at all of your venues you should probably pick a different amp because you pay a premium for it being battery powered.
I wanted to be able work in a backyard, city park, or festival without worrying about extension cords or plugs.
I have booked a festival for several years specifically because I can perform in a park with no electrical requirements.
That festival alone has paid for this amp many, many times over.
2 Quality Sound
You have probably heard battery powered amps that sounded horrible.
A tinny, staticky amp is often worse than no amplification at all.
I wanted to be sure that there was absolutely no difference between the Roland - CUBE Street EX and a quality plug in amp.
It has 50 watts of power and a stereo speaker system with dual woofers and tweeters.
I don’t know all the details but the CUBE Street EX is basically like two CUBE Street amps put together in one cabinet.
So be sure you get the CUBE Street EX (not just the CUBE Street).
I have used it in living rooms and gotten clean sound at very low levels.
I have used it in schools (and hundreds of kids in a crowded gym heard every word clearly).
I’ve also used it outdoors at festivals with the volume cranked all the way up as I gathered my crowd.
It did not have any distortion
It gave huge impressive output that could be heard blocks away.
3 Multiple Inputs
I use the CUBE Street EX mostly for my magic show.
I needed an amp that could play MP3 music from my phone while I used the microphone.
I know that lots of buskers plug in their instrument and microphone.
It has four independent channels for connecting a variety of mics, instruments, and audio devices.
I always use it by myself but there are two XLR mic inputs which allows two microphones at once.
I use one input for my microphone and one input for my background music.
I set the volume of each separately and have been pleased with the results.
4 Reliability
It was important for me to find an amp that would simply work.
I did not want to have to fiddle with things and I want to be able to grab it, throw it in my van, and go.
I have been using the Roland - CUBE Street EX for three years now and have not had any problems with it at all.
The case is sturdy injection-molded ABS plastic.
Roland is a well-respected brand.
I have been using it in all kinds of conditions both indoors and outdoors and have not had any problems.
5 Ease of Use
The amp is easy to set up.
For a living room or backyard you can set it right on the ground.
It is angled correctly for sound.
For larger venues I put it on this stand.
The inputs are clear and if I need to, I can quickly adjust them as I am performing.
The compartment for the batteries does not take any tools and is easy to get to.
It weighs just over 15 lbs. While that is not feather light, it is easily manageable.
I’ve used this amp in all sorts of conditions and venues and it has never disappointed me.
Bonus
Here’s that bonus I promised you.
As they say, a sound system is only as good as the microphone.
I wanted to be sure I had a quality portable microphone.
The microphone had to be wireless and the whole system needed to run without outlet power or it would defeat the purpose of the portable system.
Also, I move around a lot in my show and wear costumes so I did not want an awkward belt pack or 9v battery system to worry about.
I settled on the Samson Micro Airline Wireless Earset System.
It is rechargeable and the whole microphone system is in the earpiece.
I love it because it is light and works great.
It picks up my voice clearly and makes the amplifier sound great.
It took a lot of research but I think I found the best system for me with the Roland - CUBE Street EX and the Samson Micro Airline Wireless.
