Unlike acute pain, chronic pain tends to stick around for many months, years, or in severe cases, decades. Living with chronic pain is difficult. Chronic pain has a negative impact on a person’s quality of life, mood, and stamina and leads to more stress and reduces health. The chronic pain epidemic is massive and only getting worse.
Chronic pain affected 20.4% of adults throughout the world in 2019 and it is the number-one cause of long-term disability in America. 70% of people affected by chronic pain syndrome are women. Chronic lower back pain is the most common type of chronic pain. 50% of adults claim to suffer from chronic headaches. Chronic pain costs reach $635 billion a year. 36 million Americans missed work due to high-impact chronic pain in a one-year period.
Why are Americans and many other individuals suffering from chronic pain at astronomical rates? Aren't there effective treatments such as prescription painkillers, surgeries, injections, and much more? Aren't these working to get people out of pain? According to the growing statistics... not so much. And with using opioids or various other medicines for pain management, there can also be side effects, tolerance, physical dependence, withdrawal, addiction, and other negative consequences.
In episode 198 of the Elevation Recovery Podcast, Matt Finch interviews Daniel G. Lyman, LCSW, a psychotherapist and mental health coach based in Portland, OR & Los Angeles, CA. He specializes in the treatment of chronic pain, anxiety (including OCD), depression, and sexuality. He earned both a master’s degree in Social Work and Public Administration from the University of Southern California. Integrating a sense of humor into all modalities, Daniel works to enable and motivate his clients to take steps towards creating lasting change and eliminating chronic physical symptoms. He has been working in the chronic pain field for nearly a decade and is currently a clinical supervisor at the Pain Psychology Center in Los Angeles. He has worked with thousands of clients to overcome pain on 6 continents (still waiting on Antarctica). Beyond his work, Daniel likes to exercise, play with his dog, and travel.
Here is what you're going to learn:
The 7 Lessons of Pain discussed in the book Think Away Your Pain: Your Brain is the Solution to Your Pain, by David Schechter, M.D., and how to heal from chronic pain using the most up-to-date research on healing from chronic pain that both Dr. Schechter and Daniel G. Lyman use to help the people they work with.
