⏳ Time and Work: The Essentials
At its core, Time and Work is about the relationship between how fast someone works (Efficiency) and how long it takes them to finish a task (Time).
The Golden Formula
The most important thing to remember is that Work is the product of Efficiency and Time. We represent it as:
From this, we can derive two crucial rules:
Inverse Proportionality: If efficiency goes up (you work faster), the time taken goes down.
The "One Day" Work Method: If a person can finish a job in n days, their work done in 1 day is \frac{1}{n}.
Common Problem Types
To master this topic for exams, you usually need to tackle these three scenarios:
Individual vs. Combined Work: "If A takes 10 days and B takes 15, how long if they work together?"p
Tip: Use the LCM Method to find a "Total Work" units value. It’s much faster than dealing with fractions!
