When we think about ancient Greece, we usually picture Athens or Sparta. But many of the ideas that shaped Greek thought began elsewhere in Ionia, a group of Greek cities along the western coast of Anatolia.
In this video, we explore who the Ionians were and why they mattered. From their migration across the Aegean to their maritime world, from the birth of early philosophy to life under Persian rule, and from the Ionian Revolt to the arrival of Alexander the Great, this is the story of a society that influenced the ancient world without ever becoming an empire.
The Ionians didn’t conquer through force. They shaped history through ideas by asking new questions about nature, knowledge, and explanation.
This is the history of Ionia, and why it’s still worth paying attention to today.
