This is only a test! The point of this experiment is to show that in some applications, a high gain mic preamp is not necessary, and in bypassing the mic preamp, the is less electronics in the signal path. My speaking voice barely tickles the Gain Reduction, but a vocalist surely would generate more Sound Pressure level.
This recently refurbished LA-3a has had its rear panel switches modified so that the one labeled as "GAIN" is a 20dB balanced attenuator (for Mic-Line operation) and the bottom switch (labeled as Compress-Limit) now provides a series parallel option for the input transformer primary. Normally the windings are in series, but in parallel provide the transformer has an additional 6dB of gain.
All the "typical" work has been done - new electrolytic capacitors, low noise high value resistors replaced in the gain stages, the rebuilt T4 optical assembly has all new parts and the EL panel driver transformer has been replaced (because the original transformer was defective).
