Y’all… I finally found Ms. Beverly, and I cannot even explain how happy I was to see her doing okay!

If you’ve followed Ms. Beverly’s story, you know I met her last August when she was experiencing homelessness. One of the main reasons she was on the streets was because she had not been able to access her Social Security income for months prior to us meeting. Without that income, stable housing just wasn’t possible.

If you follow my TikTok, you can see her full journey saved at the top of my page under “Ms. Beverly.” You’ll see how tirelessly we worked making countless calls to Direct Express, navigating long hold times, going in person to the Social Security office to update her address, submitting verification documents, and walking through every step required to get her debit card reissued.

It was a long process, but we did not give up.

Along the way, Ms. Beverly met a woman who offered her temporary housing. Thankfully, because we were able to resolve her Social Security and Direct Express issues, she began receiving her SSI income again which allowed her to move into housing. That was always the goal.

Ms. Beverly told me she did not want to spend another winter on the streets. And she didn’t.

Although she is currently housed, she is facing new challenges. Her lease is up in March, and time is truly of the essence to find her a safe place to live that is also near public transportation. Right now, she is not within walking distance of a bus stop. To attend doctor’s appointments or even go to the grocery store, she has to call cabs or use Z-Trip. On a fixed income, transportation costs add up quickly, and there are times she simply cannot afford a ride.

Our goal now is to secure housing that keeps her safe, stable, and accessible to public transit so she can maintain her independence without the constant financial strain of transportation.
