History:
Bagh district was part of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir before the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947.
The area was part of the Poonch rebellion in 1947-48, during which many locals fought against the Dogra rulers of Jammu and Kashmir.
After the ceasefire between India and Pakistan in 1949, Bagh became part of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region of Pakistan.

The Neelum Valley Road, which runs along the Neelum River, is a popular tourist destination and passes through some scenic areas of Bagh district.
