"Shadow Screen" is my contribution to the Osaka World Fair 2025. The topic of which is "co-creating futures of tomorrow." The Austrian Pavillion exhibits an original Japanese screen from the 16th century, found in a castle in Graz, "Osaka su Byobu".
It depicts the flourishing court life at the Osaka Castle, showing many details of the population's daily activites. Japanese tea houses are also depicted, which is the basis for my artistic research. I wanted to create a contemplative artwork, which works with the simplest tools possible (a tea candle). Projecting the buddhist zen expression "Ichigo Ichie" onto the wall, it reminds the viewer of the transience of all phenomena and acts as a reminder to cherish the present moment, as it is never to return in the same way again.
