Cover by me of this song by John Martyn. 'Jelly Roll Baker'. Sometimes also referred to as 'Easy Blues'.
A brief temporary return from my sabattical...(had enough of the work for awhile- the guitar see, she beckoned me!)
Originally on the album Solid Air (1973).
By the way, I seem to give a bit of a mean look at the end- that's directed at the bloody vid camera that threatened to peep away for some reason (due to sods law).
[JM Guitar Nuttas: I used regular tuning here, but down 3 full tones-with Bb on the fat 6th string. The key is in the root major of the 5th string open, so I played this in Eb here. (But that would be Amajor chords in concert pitch regular)
It's a blues, so the underlying structure are the chords of the key (I, IV & V), but the picking is based around the notes from the root keys blues scale..so I used the Eb blues scale here. [You can't get away with just minor pentatonic either- this tune actually focuses on that flat 5th.]
Use of the blues scale notes is very evident on the dominant 'roll' ( a roll =a 'riff' if youre an electric player). That's the roll based around the 1st fret hammered on from open 4th str' to the 5th str fret 3. So it uses the 4th, the flat 5th and the flat 3rd of the Blues scale.
Variations occur, but too numerous to mention here.
This bloody thing (the picking) eluded me for years. Then a few weeks ago, I just sat down and played it in more or less one or two goes. It needs a few go's though, to synch the words with the picking.
More details on the McGeachyGuitar website will follow when I have time to scratch my posterior one day.
No one -*no one*-has ever made a tab of this...so that's something I must try to do on that site.
Quite a few players have covered this version of John Martyns famous piece he made his own (he varied the original song with his percussive picking style),
so a tip of the hat is apt here- Willy MIlne (gffwillie), kipper1999, windingboy, and johnni2bad.. all have done fine covers of this JM classic. Alan Murphy also does a cracking version.
Recorded on two tracks live, Yamaha LLX16 guitar, 2 condensor mics (Samson pencil CO2 and the MXL 770) with some internal pickup signal also. ]
