Vom Parkplatz geht es ein kurzes Stück über einen breiten Weg bis zur ersten Gabelung, wo die Rundtour durch den Hljódaklettar Krater beginnt. Wir sind rechts abgezweigt, und gelangen so zuerst an beeindruckenden Basaltfelsen vorbei sowie an der Lavahöhle Kirkja.
Anschließend geht es weiter in Richtung der roten Vulkankegel Rauðhólar, was übersetzt „die roten Hügel“ bedeutet. Diese Vulkane werden auf ein Alter von etwa 5200 Jahre geschätzt.
Der Hauptgipfel ist aus Naturschutzgründen gesperrt. Aber auch vom Vorgipfel bieten sich tolle Ausblicke in die Schlucht des Jökulsá Flusses, der weiter aufwärts unter anderem den mächtigen Dettifoss speist.
Ab hier geht es links in einem Bogen auf dem Rundweg zurück Richtung Parkplatz.

From the parking lot, it's a short stretch along a wide path to the first fork, where the circular route through the Hljódaklettar crater area begins. We branched off to the right and first passed impressive basalt rocks and the Kirkja lava cave.
Then we continue towards the red volcanic cones Rauðhólar, which translates to “the red hills”. These volcanoes are estimated to be around 5200 years old.
The main summit is closed for conservation reasons. But the pre-summit also offers great views of the gorge of the Jökulsá river, which further up feeds the mighty Dettifoss.
From here it goes left in an arc on the circular path back towards the parking lot.
