For most of human history, dreams have been revered as portals into higher states of consciousness. Dreams were recognised by our ancient ancestors as the primary medium through which the deities of the spiritual realms were able to impart their divine messages and healings to the physical world.

This meditation journey is inspired by this wisdom of our ancestors, and especially by the healing dream temples of ancient Egypt and Greece, that were hugely successful for over a thousand years (until they were dismantled by the sweeping oppression of the Roman Catholic Church.)

The precise workings of these dream temples have been lost in the sands of time but there is much to suggest that they were deeply hypnotic experiences that expanded the consciousness of the seekers into a trance-like state. Seekers then slept in special ceremonial chambers to receive transcendent visions and sacred encounters with the divine deities through their dream states. These dream visions were then interpreted in the morning by the temple priests and priestesses to determine the treatment that had been prescribed.

These sacred dream temple sleeps were more akin to astral projections and out of body experiences than to regular sleep. Pilgrims were prepared with ritual bathing, prayers, fasting, herbal elixirs, chanting and ceremony that moved them into highly altered states. They then lay down on special beds and meditated into the hypnagogic state, sometimes waiting for many hours for visions of the divine deity to appear. In ancient Greek temples the pilgrims slept with the temple snakes slithering freely around them on the floors and even on their bodies! So the sleep was understandably very light, with a lot of focused awareness and spiritual intention, which would have resulted in vivid hypnagogic visions, lucid dreams and out of body experiences.

For this meditation I’ve re-created a modern version of an ancient dream temple experience, using some of the same powerful consciousness-bending techniques (but no snakes :)) Our dream temple is not a physical structure but an imaginal one. It is our inner temple, deep within our psyche. A place where we can commune with our soul guides and our higher self—and receive their loving guidance, wisdom and healing through our dream state.

To prepare for this journey you may wish to take a salted bath, to cleanse and purify your energy field. Ritual bathing at the ancient dream temples was of the utmost importance, and many were located beside sacred springs.

Use headphones to experience the binaural beats, and an eye mask to block out all light. I recommend to leave on a gentle lamp or light in your room, to make astral projection at night time more inviting.

Keep a journal and pen beside your bed, and of course, you will need to interpret the dreams and visions you receive in the morning. They will most likely be very potent symbols of dream medicine.

Creating this meditation has been a very powerful journey for me, resulting in very heightened astral experiences. This guide is probably the longest I have ever done at a full 90 minutes. The recording then has a further 90 minutes of binaural beats and sonic bath to ease us into the hypnagogic state and beyond...
