That's because the Chinese piece of art, though worth between $100 and $300, was sold by a Scottsdale company the day after Christmas for $96,000.

Talk about a happy holiday.

"We knew there would be sleepers in this auction, but did not realize this piece was so rare until the pre-auction bids climbed to $11,000," said Josh Levine, owner of J. Levine Auction & Appraisal.

"It proves the power of the Internet, because bidders from Asia recognized the markings inscribed at the bottom of the piece to be that of the Ch'ing dynasty."

The bronze statue from the estate of Frederic A. Linn unleashed a "bidding frenzy that ignited international interest in the rare piece."

In the end, the statue was auctioned off for $96,000, including the buyer's premium.

The statue's selling price was a big chunk of the $140,000 the estate sale raised, according to Levine Auction & Appraisal.


"Linn was an interior designer and antiques collector, known for his exquisite and eclectic taste in worldwide collectibles," the company's press release said. "A lifelong collector who had a shop in Phoenix for several years, Linn restored and refurbished antiques and furniture, designed his own bolo ties and created several pieces of furniture and machines over a span of six decades."
