Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: I'm having huge problems with getting different rhythms into my melody lines. I enjoy making up melodies, but they all end up really generic rhythmically. I'd like to get my melody ideas using more diverse rhythm types. What kinds of technical drills can I do to build more variety with; eighth-notes, triplets, sixteenth-notes and syncopation? Thanks.
Shawn - Athens, OH. USA
A: Using guitar technique drills is probably one of the very best ways to practice different single-note rhythms. These kinds of technical drills are not only really good for building better picking ability, they're great for left and right hand co-ordination. In this lesson, we'll take a run through practicing eighth-note exercises, sixteenth-note drills, triplet ideas and syncopated picking exercises. By the end of the lesson you should have a really helpful group of picking studies that will allow you to integrate several new rhythmic patterns into your melody lines.
