The United States Coast Guard is helping to clear the Hudson River off thick ice that is hampering navigation on the waterway.
Lieutenant Ken Sauerbrunn explains that the crew aboard the ship are facilitating the reasonable demands of commerce.
"We are keeping the track in the ice as soft as possible so that barges carrying home heating oil, gasoline, jet fuels and other vital products can make it to terminals and eventually consumers throughout the Northeast."
Much of the Hudson River has been frozen over in recent weeks as the Northeast region has endured bitter cold temperatures.
Lt. Sauerbunn says that has made it difficult along the river.
"Inside the track the ice can be about 8 to 12 inches thick, but outside the track it could be up to a foot and half thick."
Lt. Sauerbunn expects that the ice floes will continue for "at least another month."
