Vayanattu Kulavan Theyyam holds a revered position in the cultural traditions of North Kerala, particularly among the Thiyya community, along with worship from Nair and Nambiar families. This deity’s origin story connects closely to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

According to the legend, during a hunting expedition in the sacred forest of Madhuvanam, Lord Shiva indulged in toddy, leading to intoxication. Displeased, Goddess Parvati used her divine powers to stop the toddy flow, angering Shiva. In his frustration, Shiva struck his thigh, creating a divine being to collect toddy. However, this deity disobeyed Shiva and consumed the toddy himself. As a result, Shiva punished him by taking away his sight. Later, feeling compassion, Shiva gave him artificial eyes and a torch, symbolizing enlightenment and guidance, and sent him to the mountains of Wayanad, where he became known as Vayanattu Kulavan.

In Theyyam performances, Vayanattu Kulavan is portrayed as a guardian deity armed with a bow and arrow, representing his hunting skills. The dynamic rituals, including the use of fire torches, highlight his fierce yet protective nature. Devotees worship him fervently at ancestral groves, seeking blessings for protection and prosperity.

കഥാനുസാരം, മധുവനം എന്ന പുണ്യവനത്തിൽ വേട്ടയാടുന്നതിനിടയിൽ, ശിവൻ മദ്യം പാനം ചെയ്യുകയും മദിരാക്തനാകുകയും ചെയ്തു. പാർവതിയ്ക്ക് ശിവന്റെ ഈ ശീലം ഇഷ്ടമില്ലാതിരുന്നുവോ എന്നതിന്‍റെ തനതായ ശക്തി ഉപയോഗിച്ച് അവൾ മദ്യം പൊങ്ങിയൊഴുക്കി. കോപിതനായ ശിവൻ തന്റെ കാലിൽ അടിച്ച്, ഒരു ദൈവത്തെ സൃഷ്ടിച്ചു, താടിയുടെ ഒഴുക്കു വീണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ. എന്നാൽ, ആ ദൈവം ശിവന്‍റെ നിർദ്ദേശങ്ങൾ ലംഘിച്ച്, താടി സ്വയം പാനം ചെയ്തു. ശിവൻ ക്രുദ്ധനായി അവന്‍റെ കാഴ്ച നഷ്ടമാക്കുകയും, പിന്നീട് artificial eyes, torch നൽകി മലനാട്ടിലേക്ക് അയയ്ക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു. അവിടെ അവൻ വയനാട്ടുകുലവൻ എന്നറിയപ്പെട്ടു.
