For this short I turn to another insight from Jung’s The Undiscovered Self, where he offers future psychologists a piece of guidance almost no one seems willing to practice today. Jung insists that yes, one must continue to study the vast intricacies of human nature, and deepen one’s knowledge of the psyche—but that when encountering an actual individual, the psychologist must temporarily suspend all judgment and adopt a posture of near-total ignorance and humility. Without this momentary unknowing, practitioners inevitably project categories, theories, and assumptions onto the singular human being before them. Jung warned us that failing to do so would lead psychology away from genuine understanding—and tragically, his warning remains overwhelmingly unheeded.
