tripped asleep, fell awake
fold the money under the tray
red light spilled down the hall
chased me up a recurring thought
kept me frozen on the ladder
i was high up on the tower
rang so loud no one answered
red “BANG!” flag clicked out the barrel

console the guest, silences
around the scene, images
on the screen, my eyelids
soaked in fuzz, skin on the pavement
he’ll never know, that it was me
on the roof, grew no wings
Stella tried hard to scream
but no one there heard the dog sing

claim the fault, start to beg
for him to move, legs over the bed
found my way home, through the shape of things
the new condos, the old trees
