1. A Clear Calling (vv. 1–7)

Before we ever see Paul’s hindrance, we see his clarity.
    •    He knew who he was — a servant.
    •    He knew what he was — an apostle.
    •    He knew why he was separated — unto the gospel of God.

Hindrances do not confuse a man who is clear about his calling.

Paul’s foundation was not convenience — it was commission.

2. A Persistent Desire (vv. 8–12)

Paul longed to visit Rome.

He prayed without ceasing.
He planned repeatedly.
He desired mutual strengthening.

His ministry heart was not casual — it was intentional.

3. A Real Hindrance (v. 13)

“Oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,)”

This word “let” means restrained, hindered, prevented.

Paul had:
    •    The desire
    •    The plan
    •    The prayer life

Yet he was delayed.

What hindered him?

Scripture shows several realities in Paul’s life:
    •    Persecution
    •    Imprisonment
    •    Shipwreck
    •    Beatings
    •    Ministry obligations elsewhere
    •    Even satanic opposition (see 1 Thessalonians 2:18)

But here is the key:

Hindrance did not cancel his mission — it only delayed his arrival.

He did not say:
    •    “God must not want this.”
    •    “The door must be closed forever.”
    •    “I quit.”

Instead, he said:
“I purposed… I was hindered… but I still intend fruit.”

Hindrance is not always denial.
Sometimes it is divine timing.

4. A Continuing Debt (vv. 14–15)

Even while hindered, Paul says:

“I am debtor…”

His sense of responsibility did not fade because of difficulty.

He was ready.

Hindrance did not weaken his readiness — it strengthened it.

5. An Unshaken Confidence (vv. 16–17)

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ…”

The power was never in Paul’s travel schedule.
The power was always in the Gospel.

The righteousness of God does not depend on smooth circumstances.

The just live by faith — not by ease.

Working Through Hindrances

Paul teaches us:
    •    Desire the work.
    •    Pray for the opportunity.
    •    Plan responsibly.
    •    Accept delay without quitting.
    •    Stay ready.
    •    Keep confidence in the Gospel.

Sometimes hindrances:
    •    Refine motive.
    •    Strengthen resolve.
    •    Prepare deeper fruit.
    •    Redirect timing.

Paul would eventually reach Rome — not as a free traveler, but as a prisoner — and yet the Gospel still spread.

God may change the method,
but He will not abandon His purpose.

Summary

In Romans 1:1–17 we see a servant with:
    •    A clear calling
    •    A burning desire
    •    A real hindrance
    •    A continuing sense of debt
    •    An unashamed confidence

Hindrance did not silence Paul.
It sharpened him.

The Gospel advances — even through delay.

When roads were blocked and doors were barred,
His heart still burned for souls afar.
The chains could bind his feet in place,
But could not chain redeeming grace.

Delayed — but never dismayed.
Hindered — but never halted.
Pressed — but still progressing.

For fruit grows slow in stubborn ground,
And faith walks on when none is found.

Hindrance may slow the servant, but it cannot stop the Gospel.
