OK, I have no clue how this is going to sound on YouTube. I'm in Joplin, MO right now, it's after 1:30am and I'm not able to hook my laptop up to my surround system to see if there's any bass. But, this is the new "Rolling Thunder" sound system by Broadway Limited.

The 2-8-8-2 steamer in this one belongs to Dad. He got it earlier this year, but had to send it back to BLI due to a bad decoder. I know, nothing man made is perfect, sometimes things aren't made quite right. But this is also a $600 locomotive... hopefully it was just a fluke.

But he got it back within 3 weeks from BLI, which I admit, greatly impresses me. Three week turnaround for a model... that's fast. So good job there BLI. This was filmed within a week of him getting it back from the manufacturer.

If you don't know, BLI's "Rolling Thunder" is a new decoder that transmits low end bass signals to a receiver that is connected to a powered 16(ish) inch subwoofer. The locomotives must be equipped with the Paragon 3 sound system, steam or diesel for it to work. The nearer the locomotive is to the receiver, the louder the sound gets. I guess if you wanted the sound to stay constant on the layout, you could get a series of these receivers and subwoofers and position them around the layout. You may be deaf within a month's time, but it'll be awesome.

In person, the subwoofer is impressive. The amount of bass that thingr generates will easily vibrate your whole house, scare your pets, and cause untold numbers of divorces. It's FAR louder than it should be for an HO scale model. Don't get me wrong, I love the sound, it's unreal, but it's also outrageously over powered for a 20" long model. No model could ever pump out the amount of sound and bass as the real thing, but this system brings that missing element to the hobby.

Despite it being completely ridiculous, it's still a lot of fun to experience. And I'm serious, the volume. Our club's layout room is a monster. The layout is 76' long by 56' wide. So about 90x70 room with open 20' ceiling, just a massive room size. Pretty much every home layout owner's wet dream...

And we STILL had to turn the volume down!

I can't imagine how loud this would be in an average sized home basement. That's a MUCH smaller and more confined space. I can only expect there will be a lot of pissed off wives... or spouses out there. But if you want that loud, pounding, shake you to your core deep rumbling bass, this is the system to get.
