Hiʻuwai: A Hawaiian Cultural Practice As Shared By Kanani Aton
What do you need to release? What do you need to let go of? How can we access the healing and rejuvenating powers of nature?
In this video, Kanani Aton shares her personal background, various trainings and evolution as a cultural practitioner related to her practice of "Hi'uwai" or cleansing and purifying through water.
Join Kanani as she takes us through the process of Hi'uwai "Pre-Ceremony - Preparing to Enter the Water" which include: "Setting Your Intentions", "Asking Permission", "Calling In Your Ancestors", and "Entering Safely".
"Process in the Water" including 3 mindful breaths each coupled with thoughtful meditation on the following: 1. "Gratitude", 2. "Forgiveness", 3. "Inspiration".
"Closing the Ceremony" including: "Safely Exiting", "Acknowledging and Thanking the area, elements and ancestors present", "Reflecting on Experience", and "Leaving the Area ".
Also included in the video are adaptations of the practice for those not near the ocean. Where Kanani shares how we can use the principals and process of this cleaning protocol for our lives in various contexts.
As you peruse the following resources, we ask you to keep in mind that the protocol shared here is just one way to engage in this practice. In Hawaiʻi protocols, practices, and ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi (Hawaiian language) terms can vary depending on the kumu, the island or even the district where they come from. We also keep in mind that culture is never stagnant and continually evolves to meet the times in which it lives. What remains constant is the aloha and positive intention with which these practices are shared.
ʻAʻohe pau ka ʻike i ka hālau hoʻokahi.
All knowledge is not taught in the same school.
One can learn from many sources.
Pukui - ʻŌlelo Noʻeau # 203
We encourage you to try any of the components shared in our videos to create your own Hiʻuwai practice in your space.
