In this editorial episode, Mr. Sujit Nair discusses how India has made substantial progress in reducing multidimensional poverty over the years, but challenges persist, particularly in addressing disparities and vulnerabilities within its population.

India has seen significant changes in its poverty landscape over the years. Official poverty estimates from 2011 reported that approximately 269 million people, or 21.9% of the population, were living in poverty. This data, based on Household Consumption Expenditure Surveys, was last updated in 2011, and two rounds of data collection were missing.

However, a UNDP study in July 2023 highlighted remarkable progress, indicating that 415 million people in India escaped poverty within just 15 years, from 2005/2006 to 2019/2021. This achievement was part of global progress, with 25 countries, including India, halving their Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) values in the same timeframe. India's MPI reduced from 55.1% in 2005/2006 to 16.4% in 2019/2021. The report noted improvements in various indicators, including nutrition and child mortality.

A subsequent report by Niti Aayog in July 2023 revealed that approximately 14.96% of India's population, or 20.79 crore people, still lived in multidimensional poverty. However, there was progress, as multidimensional poverty decreased from 24.85% in 2015-16 to 14.96% in 2019-2021, representing about 13.5 crore people moving out of poverty. This index considered factors beyond income, such as education and health.

The report detailed various indicators contributing to multidimensional poverty, including nutrition, years of schooling, access to clean cooking fuel, sanitation services, housing, and asset ownership. While there were improvements in some areas, challenges remained, particularly regarding nutrition and education.

The report also highlighted regional disparities, with several states making significant progress in reducing multidimensional poverty, such as Bihar, Jharkhand, and Madhya Pradesh. However, India still had the highest number of poor people globally, including a substantial proportion of children living in poverty.

Despite these advancements, India's poverty situation remained complex, with urban-rural divides and gender disparities. Female-headed households in India experienced higher poverty rates compared to male-headed households. Moreover, India continued to have a large vulnerable population, with the potential to slip into extreme poverty.
