In early 2026, Ukraine established its first overseas drone manufacturing facility in a small British town — a significant shift in defense industrial strategy. The factory produces approximately 1,000 combat drones per month, with plans to scale further.
The logic was straightforward: Ukrainian factories on home soil are vulnerable to Russian missile strikes. Throughout 2024 and 2025, Russia systematically targeted Ukrainian defense production facilities with long-range precision weapons. By moving production to NATO territory, Ukraine placed manufacturing capacity beyond Russia's reach while maintaining the technical expertise and battlefield feedback loop that made Ukrainian drones effective.
The factory operates under the broader Build with Ukraine initiative, which enables co-production of Ukrainian weapons systems in European partner states. Drones are designed by Ukrainian engineers based on requirements from front-line units, prototyped and tested in Ukraine, then manufactured at scale in partner countries. The British facility is one of the first operational results of this program.
The development reflects Ukraine's transformation from a country dependent on Western weapons deliveries to an emerging defense exporter. At the UMEX defense exhibition in Abu Dhabi in early 2026, Ukraine showcased the Riki interceptor drone — its first counter-UAV system offered for international sale. The country that was fighting for survival in 2022 is now selling the weapons it invented under fire.
