Why did an entire community ask Jesus Christ to leave after He healed two traumatised men?
In Gospel of Matthew 8:28–34, Jesus restores two men who had been living among the tombs, feared, avoided, and written off by society. But instead of rejoicing, the townspeople beg Jesus to leave their region.
This Bible study explores the most unsettling question in the passage:
Why is healing sometimes rejected, especially when it exposes what a community has learned to tolerate?
Using a trauma-informed and historical lens, this teaching looks at:
Why the demons asked to be sent into the pigs
What the destruction of the pigs symbolises in the biblical narrative
Why healing often threatens systems built on avoidance, control, or economic stability
How traumatised people are frequently misunderstood, marginalised, or silenced in religious spaces
Why healed people are often more disruptive than wounded ones
What this passage reveals about church hurt, spiritual abuse, and religious trauma
This is not a deliverance-focused teaching, and it is not about blaming churches. It is a careful exploration of how trauma, systems, and faith interact, and why Jesus consistently sides with the wounded rather than preserving the comfort of institutions.
If you have ever felt that your healing made others uncomfortable, that telling the truth cost you belonging, or that leaving an unsafe church felt like failure, this passage speaks directly to that experience.
In the coming weeks, I will be launching a live trauma-healing program that gently integrates Scripture, nervous system understanding, and emotional safety for those healing from trauma and religious harm. There is no pressure to join. This teaching stands on its own, but if you are looking for a safe and thoughtful space to heal, more information will be shared soon. You can join the waitlist here: https://woundstowisdom.coach/
Part 1 of this series explores the trauma responses of the men themselves and how unresolved trauma shapes behaviour in ways often mistaken for sin or rebellion.
This Bible study is for those seeking a deeper, more compassionate understanding of trauma in Scripture, why healing is often resisted, and how Jesus responds when systems value stability over restoration.
