This video is on the warning signs and symptoms of blood clots in the legs and lungs, risk factors associated with blood clots, Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), Pulmonary Embolism (PE).
Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary Embolism (DVT/PE) are often poorly diagnosed and serious, but preventable medical conditions.
Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a medical condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a deep vein. These clots usually develop in the lower leg, thigh, or pelvis, but they can also occur in the arm.
It is important to know about DVT because it can happen to anybody and can cause serious illness and disability. The good news is that DVT is preventable and treatable if discovered early.
Blood clots do not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or race. Blood clots can affect anyone. Three major risk factors are:
Cancer
Hospitalization & Surgery
Pregnancy
Other Risk Factors Include:
Birth control that contains estrogen
Being overweight
Hormone replacement therapy that contains estrogen
Family history of blood clots
Trauma, particularly when the vein is injured
Smoking
Immobility or sitting for long periods
Deep Vein Thrombosis symptoms:
Swelling of your leg or arm
Pain or tenderness not caused by an injury
Skin that is warm to the touch, with swelling or pain
Redness of the skin, with swelling or pain
Pulmonary Embolism Symptoms:
Difficulty breathing
Chest pain that worsens with a deep breath
Coughing up blood
Faster than normal, or irregular heartbeat
The diagnosis of DVT or PE requires special tests that can only be performed by a doctor. That is why it is important for you to seek medical care if you experience any of the symptoms of DVT or PE.
