This 1942 cultural film "Venezuela Moves Ahead" was produced by Julian Bryan for the Office of the Coordination of Inter-American Affairs, created by President Roosevelt in 1941. A statue of Bolivar is in New York Central Park. An animated map shows the Spanish conquest in the Americas (:20-1:29) and revolts led by Bolivar and Jose San Martin. The ‘Monument to the Liberators’ is shown (1:46-2:45). Venezuela’s topography areas are mapped (3:29-4:18). The highlands mountains have mahogany trees (4:20-4:38). A man rides a donkey through banana trees (5:03-5:25). A worker climbs and tosses down coconuts. A donkey pulls a wagon of coconuts, which are split over a sharp blade (5:29-6:10). A woman prods cacao pods off the tree trunk. She picks them up with a sharp stick and into a basket on her head. A man uses a machete to open the pod and extract the white cacao seeds (6:22-7:46). The Orinoco River is shown (8:13-8:32), as are cattle ranches (8:57). Fisherman throw shore nets I; their catch displayed, one is fileted (9:03-10:05). Horses drink in a stream at Mucuchies (10:15-10:38). A man leads a donkey to a tile roof house with a center patio (10:39-11:10). A man makes a woven straw hat; his sandals are made from automobile tires (11:11-11:27). A woman spins wool (11:34-11:42). A man hews a wooden plow, which he and a team of oxen use up a steep hill (11:46-12:47). Wheat is trod by horses and thrown up into the air using shovels to separate the chaff. Cow-hide containers serve as a granary (12:48-13:26). Milling is done with a stone by hand and kneaded to create arepa cornbread (13:27-13:38). The fruit of a tuna cactus is picked (13:53-14:05). The Tovar church holds religious ceremonies on market days (15:31-16:24). A boy sets off fireworks (16:26-16:54). Men on horseback twist bull’s tails (16:55-17:53). Men tie down luggage on top of an autobus (18:15-18:33). A boy offers an opened coconut to a man for a coin (19:10-19:30). A driver uses a pump atomizer to spray insecticide inside a car (19:31-19:41). An autobus, ambulance, and Chevy Stylemaster cross flooded roads (20:45-21:22). Road workers drink out of water pouchs (21:24-22:00). Oil rigs stand in water at Maracaibo (22:44-22:55). Men smoke and play dominos (23:21-23:35). A nurse stands between hospital beds with patients (23:49-24:00). Cans are shown of KLIM, Carnation and Nestle milk, and Premiere apricots (24:13). An oil drilling truck moves, begins drilling, and seismographs set up. Trucks carry a storage tanks and derricks. Drilling and pipelines are shown (24:15-26:39). The Curacao refineries and Old Holland are shown (26:54-27:57). A KLM Douglas DC-5 takes off and lands (28:00-28:48). In Caracas, a 1930s Buick passes a cart (29:11). A child sits inside iron grillwork at a window (29:22). The Capitol is shown, as are statues of Bolivar and Henry Clay (29:49-30:40). A sewer is dug along city streets using a Jaeger (30:48-31:00). A radio station DJ works (32:41-32:58). A cotton field is dusted using a Farmall with steel wheels (33:35-34:12).
