This is video #6 in my 12-part video series based on my book The Power of the Adolescent Brain: Strategies for Teaching Middle and High School Students. In this video you will learn the following 5 practical strategies for incorporating more peer learning connections in the middle and high school classroom:
1. Use Self-Awareness Assessments
2. Let Students Keep Personal Journals
3. Connect Content to Students Personal Lives
4. Teach Mindfulness Meditation
5. Have Students Create Autobiographies
In addition, this video explains why building self-awareness is so important at the secondary school level, when students are building a sense of self that will prove to be a foundation upon which to make good choices as they move into living eventually as independent individuals. The video describes the theory of Erik Erikson, who said adolescence is a struggle between ''identity'' and ''role diffusion,'' and suggests that the failure of the adolescent to construct a coherence identity leaves him or her prey to a wide range of hazards including gang violence, mental illness, substance abuse, and unsafe sexual encounters. The video provides resources including books, websites, and online assessments that teachers can use in their classrooms to help their students gain greater self-awareness.
