In 2021 the Fagradalsfjall volcano in southwest Iceland erupted into the Geldingadalir valleys. Despite COVID-19 restrictions, tens of thousands visited, aided by its location near a main road. Many, as the lava cooled, chose to risk walking on the still-steaming surface.
I interviewed senior ICE-SAR commander Guðbrandur "Brando" Örn Arnarson about the challenges facing his rescue and accident prevention teams, and about why new lava remains dangerous for many weeks.
