The Guarded Domains of Iran, better known as the Safavid Empire, is commonly considered to be one of the greatest Iranian dynasties since the of the Sassanids. Another Turkic Dynasty, they ruled Iran for over 200 years from 1501 until 1736. They would toe-to-toe with the Ottomans, and, on occasion, even defeated the Western Colonial Powers.
Ruled by a series of competent Shahs, be it Ismail I, Tahmasp I, or Abbas the Great, Iran was shaken by problems internally, not least the change in religion to Twelver Shi'a Islam.
The Safavids would ultimately fall to the usurping Afsharids under Nader Shah, who would, himself, propel Iran to new heights.
