Morning Foot “Stab”? Here’s What It Really Means (and How We Confirm It)
If you’re a runner (or on your feet a lot) and you’ve started feeling sharp pain on the bottom of your foot—especially near the heel—you might be thinking plantar fasciitis. And you may be right… but not all foot pain is plantar fasciitis, and treating the wrong source can delay real relief.
That’s why we start with a thorough assessment before recommending care. Foot pain can sometimes be “downstream,” meaning the irritation is showing up in your foot—but the real problem may be higher up, such as the ankle, knee, or even the hip. If we skip the evaluation and only focus on the foot, we risk missing the true cause.
One of the biggest clues is timing. Plantar fasciitis pain is often the worst with those first few steps in the morning. Overnight, the tissue along the bottom of the foot stiffens, and when you step down first thing, it suddenly stretches—creating that sharp, stabbing sensation.
We also look closely at the calf muscles, since tightness and tension there can increase strain through the heel and plantar fascia. And finally, we examine the joint mechanics—especially how the ankle and foot joints move—because restricted motion can change your walking pattern and overload the tissue over time.
👉 Watch the video to see what this assessment looks like and why it matters. If foot pain is limiting your running or daily life, it may be time to get clarity—and a plan that actually fits your body.
