Colombia midfielder Luis Díaz confessed that he was "living a dream" following his country's 3-0 win over Bolivia in Barranquilla on Thursday that sealed their spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
After the pain of missing out on the last World Cup in Qatar, Díaz admitted that he was very happy to be able to play in his first World Cup.
"I'm living a dream," the Bayern winger said. "Things are going my way and that's what we've always work toward to achieve great things, those goals that you always planned for in your head. You always dream of qualifying, of winning trophies, of all these great moments, but you never think that it's going to be like it is. But I'm very happy and very grateful to God for the opportunity to be able to qualify for a World Cup, to be able to qualify for my first World Cup."
Colombia manager Néstor Lorenzo added that he was very grateful to have finally sealed a spot at the World Cup after seeing Los Cafeteros edge tantalisingly close to assuring their place in recent games.
"I told the players that this was perhaps going to be an important game because it could seal our place in the World Cup," Lorenzo explained. "But the points that we've picked up during this entire process and the way that we went out and played like we did, wherever we needed to and against whoever we faced, gave us the certainty that we could do it and that we would achieve it. So, I'm very grateful, very grateful to everyone who supported us."
Colombia travel to Venezuela for their final qualifier next week, knowing that no matter what the result they will be in the hat for the World Cup in December.
