FULL DETAILS:
Recordings were done at Evil Snail Studios in Manchaca, TX
To try our best to keep the our experiment consistent for all the drums that were recorded we used the same single CAD M179 Toms Condenser Mic for all Toms and a single Audix D6 mic for the kick drum. We decided to stick to 1 mic in order to avoid more variances in the sound that could be caused by introducing the usage of more mics like Room mics for example.
Our goal wasn't to get the best tone of the drums but to see if there's a difference between the sound with the wrap and without, so the less variance the more accurate the experiment would be.
We recorded everything through an SSL Origin console Preamp and EQ channel strip. We kept the preamp gain, fader level and EQ settings EXACTLY the same and used the same exact mic and the same single channel on the SSL console. We did our best to keep the mic positions as close as possible in both recording sessions and we matched the peak levels between some of the hits to try and keep volume levels between the hits similar so we can make a fair assessment between the hits based on the Fletcher-Munson Effect.
The only variance we couldn't fully control are the stick hits themselves which naturally have their own variance so we did multiple hits and tried to get as close as possible to same hit dynamics by comparing levels of volume.
I think without a doubt, we proved that IF there is any difference between the drums sound with or without the wrap it's so insignificant that anybody who would try would have a hard time recognizing the difference. Even when using an EQ analyzer the visuals look very spot on. We went into this with no agenda in mind to our surprise found out that the drums turned out sounding in the recording practically identical with the wrap and without.
