Sanssouci Palace and Park is one of the most beautiful and historically fascinating places you can visit near Berlin — and on this trip to Germany, I experienced it firsthand.
While planning our five-day visit to Berlin, I discovered Sanssouci on Google Maps and instantly knew it was somewhere I wanted to explore. Located in Potsdam, just outside Berlin, it’s an easy journey by train and bus — but stepping into the grounds feels like stepping back centuries in time.
In this video, I take you with me as I walk through Sanssouci Palace and its vast gardens, capturing photos and cinematic footage while sharing my thoughts as a filmmaker and photographer. From entering the park near the historic windmill, to standing on the terraces of Schloss Sanssouci and looking out over the gardens, this visit quickly became more than just a sightseeing stop.
As I explore the palace, I dive into the history behind Frederick the Great, who built Sanssouci between 1745 and 1747 as a private retreat — a place for philosophy, music, art, and quiet reflection, rather than power or politics. Unlike grand royal palaces, Sanssouci was designed to feel personal, calm, and intimate — a true escape from the pressures of ruling.
Walking deeper into the park, I head toward the Neues Palais, a striking contrast to Sanssouci. Built between 1763 and 1769 after the Seven Years’ War, this palace was meant to display strength, resilience, and prestige. Along the way, I visit highlights like the Chinese House, experience the sheer scale of Sanssouci Park, and reflect on how much time you really need to explore it properly.
At the rear of Neues Palais, I explore the Kolonnade mit Triumphtor and discover how these historic buildings are still in use today as part of the University of Potsdam, blending centuries-old architecture with modern student life.
This video isn’t just about history — it’s about experiencing a place, noticing the details, and understanding why Sanssouci still matters today. Whether you’re interested in European history, Prussian architecture, cinematic travel vlogs, or planning your own trip to Berlin and Potsdam, I hope this video gives you insight, inspiration, and a reason to add Sanssouci to your list.
If you’re ever visiting Berlin, this is one place you shouldn’t miss.
