Restoring an Old Verona Tool Works FFS Pulaski Axe - Basic Cleanup

Описание: Hey everyone! I'm really enjoying restoring these axes. This old Pulaski axe has a really nice handle with good growth ring orientation, so all it really needs is a little sanding and a new finish. I'm going to keep oiling the handle, but it seems like the handle has pretty much come back and the wood does not look nearly as dry as it was.

A note about boiled linseed oil:
The reason I corrected myself in the video is that boiled linseed and linseed oils are very different. Linseed oil is oil pressed from the flax plant, and is one of a few different oils that polymerize or create a film and harden up when dried. Most linseed oil is safe to eat so long as it's food grade. Even non-food grade linseed oil is generally non toxic.

On the other hand, boiled linseed oil is not non-toxic. Contrary to the name, boiled linseed oil is not oil that has been cooked or boiled. It's linseed oil with driers added. Driers are chemical compounds that are added to something to accelerate the drying or curing process. These are pretty toxic and also have the interesting side effect of generating heat as the oil dries. This can cause spontaneous combustion of rags or towels soaked in it, so keep that in mind when working with boiled linseed oil.
