1️⃣ Speaker Race inside the Rastriya Swatantra Party

After securing a near two-thirds majority, the Rastriya Swatantra Party is preparing to form a new government under Prime Minister-elect Balen Shah. Alongside the cabinet formation, the race for the Speaker of Parliament has also drawn major attention.

Three key leaders are being discussed as potential candidates:

• Jagdish Kharel – A former journalist who later served as Minister of Information and Communication. He was elected from Lalitpur-2 with strong public support and is known for his clear speaking style and political experience.

• Sobita Gautam – One of the most popular young leaders in the party. A law graduate, she won the Chitwan-3 seat by defeating former mayor Renu Dahal. She had earlier stepped back from the Deputy Speaker race out of respect for Indira Rana but is now seen as a strong contender for Speaker.

• Indira Rana Magar – The former Deputy Speaker who already has experience running parliamentary sessions. After winning Jhapa-2 against former Speaker Devraj Ghimire, she is again in discussion for the Speaker post, although some leaders suggest she could also take a ministerial role.

Who will ultimately become Speaker remains one of the biggest political questions inside the party.



2️⃣ Who Could Become Health Minister in the Balen Government?

As the new government is being formed, another major discussion is about who will lead the Health Ministry. Several medical professionals elected to parliament are considered strong candidates.

Four names frequently mentioned are:

• Shambhu Yadav – A young doctor elected from Siraha-3 who has worked in private medical institutions in Kathmandu and later served patients in his home district.

• Deepak Kumar Shah – An eye specialist who defeated veteran politician Sharad Singh Bhandari in Mahottari-2. Educated in the UK, he has long experience in the health sector.

• Toshima Karki – A general surgeon and former State Minister for Health who won Lalitpur-3 twice with a large margin. She studied MBBS and later completed a master’s degree in surgery.

• Lekhjung Thapa – A senior neurologist with international recognition who won his election by a huge margin. He has worked in Nepal and abroad and has been active in policy discussions for improving Nepal’s healthcare system.

Among these candidates, it remains to be seen who will ultimately be chosen as Nepal’s next Health Minister.
