Peter Schiff points out that silver’s 2011 peak near $50 followed a rise from below $5 — a complete 10× move. By contrast, the current cycle began closer to $30, meaning silver has advanced only about 2.5× so far. Applying the same proportional math used in prior bull markets implies a potential move toward the $300 level. Importantly, today’s backdrop includes the U.S. as the world’s largest debtor, persistent fiscal deficits, and structurally higher monetary expansion, which may allow silver to travel much further than in earlier cycles. The exact timing is unknowable, but the scale of the move remains consistent with historical precedent.
Silver’s sharp daily swings are grabbing attention, but volatility alone does not invalidate the broader trend. Moves of five dollars in either direction are a function of thin trading, technical breakouts, and long-standing positioning finally unwinding. Priced against gold rather than a steadily depreciating dollar, silver still appears far from expensive by historical standards.
This rally looks less like a speculative blow-off and more like a long-delayed catch-up move. Unlike 1980, today’s backdrop includes record debt-to-GDP levels, persistent trade deficits, and a debtor-nation economy rather than a creditor one. The breakout above the long-standing $50 resistance removed a central technical ceiling, triggering momentum buying, short covering, and portfolio repositioning. Despite silver’s rapid advance, mining equities remain historically cheap, suggesting expectations of a crash are still priced in. Past cycles show true market tops form only when perfection is assumed, and risk is ignored, a phase that has not yet arrived.
