To defend against each punch while using the Philly Shell guard, you can follow these steps:
Jab:
Shoulder Roll: Raise your lead shoulder to catch the jab and roll with it. This deflects the punch away from your head.
Lead Hand Parry: Use your lead hand to parry the jab away from your face. This subtle movement can redirect the punch.
Straight Right:
Roll Under: Dip your lead shoulder and roll your upper body to the right, letting the punch slide over your shoulder.
Rear Hand Catch: Use your rear hand, which is positioned near your chin, to catch the punch by slightly turning it outward.
Left Hook:
Shoulder Roll: Rotate your upper body so that your lead shoulder absorbs the hook while your head moves slightly back or away.
Duck or Slip: Bend your knees to duck under the punch, or slip by moving your head to the inside or outside of the punch.
Right Hook/Overhand:
Shoulder Roll: Just like with the left hook, rotate your upper body, allowing your lead shoulder to absorb the punch.
Pull Back: Lean back slightly to make the punch miss, but maintain your balance.
Body Shots:
Elbow Block: Drop your lead elbow to protect your ribs when you see a body shot coming.
Bend: Bend at the waist, lowering your upper body to make the punch miss or lose its effectiveness.
The Philly Shell is all about subtle movements, conserving energy, and maintaining a strong defensive position while being ready to counter. Practice these techniques to become proficient in defending against different types of punches.
