The Euratom Treaty has not changed since it was signed by the six founding countries in 1957. This treaty is still considered as a separate legal personality from the rest of the European Union, an exceptional regime without any democratic control whose sole purpose is the promotion of nuclear power. Yet many member states do not have nuclear energy or are phasing it out. Nuclear energy raises many concerns about the health, safety, economy and difficulties associated with radioactive waste. Today, the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union and the Euratom Treaty, as well as a communication expected from the Commission on a reform of Euratom, provide a context favorable to a questioning.
At a press conference on Wednesday 16 January in the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a legal analysis on the various avenues for reforming the Euratom Treaty was presented by its author: Dr Dörte Fouquet, lawyer and partner of Becker Büttner Held.
The CRIIRAD and RECH associations, which call for the repeal of the Euratom Treaty in France, were also present.
