When I stumbled across this book at a used bookstore, I had no idea what I was in for. Tenn drops us into a world where gigantic aliens—hundreds of feet tall—dominate the Earth, and humanity survives only by adapting like insects. Our main character, Eric, belongs to a tribe literally named “Mankind,” one of many human burrow-tribes hiding inside the monsters’ colossal structures. His coming-of-age trial pulls us into questions of survival, morality, intelligence, and what it really means to be human.

This book completely blindsided me in the best way. Great writing, unsettling ideas, memorable characters, and one of the most refreshing sci-fi concepts I’ve read in years. If you’ve never heard of this one… you’re not alone, but you should give it a try.
