If you break the clip when removing the signal wire for your starter on 2014-2018 Sierras, Silverados, Tahoes, Yukons etc you might think you are in a world of hurt. Well these flimsy clips break often due to heat and becoming brittle. GM knows this and sells a part that is a new connector and wire “dongle”. Part number PT2974 or 19300471. That’s a relief. I guess.
I didn’t like the idea of a splice near the bottom of the vehicle plus the extra wire wouldn’t be protected from the heat from the exhaust (which is way too close to the starter in the first place). I figured maybe I could just swap out the broken clip/locking mechanism.
A little research revealed that this connector is TE part number 2098198 and they are available online for about $3.50 each. GM charges you $30 more for 8” of wire and a heat shrink butt connector, $33 each. No thanks. They are available from third parties for around $20 however.
But while you can’t remove the clip part only easily, you can disassemble this connector and use the whole thing. Do this on the truck, removing the signal wire from the broken connector and then putting a new connector on. No splicing needed. I did buy one of these kits on Amazon that I won’t return as I just want the truck fixed, but I only paid $20. I can live with that but hopefully this helps you out, saves you a few bucks, but most importantly, it is a much better repair than a butt connector splice.
Good luck! Be careful not to break the tabs on the pins. And this may work for other model years, but you'll have to determine that yourself. (Sorry for the portrait video too, but the phone stayed put this way since I didn't have a helper to hold it.)
