What is SB 9 California?
SB9, also known as the California Housing Opportunity and More Efficiency (HOME) Act, is a state bill that requires cities to allow one additional residential unit onto parcels zoned for single-dwelling units.

What is an ADU?
An accessory dwelling unit (ADU) is a secondary housing unit on a single-family residential lot. The term “accessory dwelling unit” is an institutional-sounding name, but it’s the most commonly-used term across the country to describe this type of housing. While the full name is a mouthful, the shorthand “ADU” is better.

The law, which passed in September 2021, went into effect across California on January 1, 2022.
