History is the study of the past. We look back at ancient (古代的) times to understand how human society developed. Great civilizations (文明) rose and fell, and powerful empires (帝国) conquered lands. By studying an artifact (文物) dug from the ground, we learn about the daily lives of our ancestors (祖先). Every century (世纪) brings change, sometimes through a violent revolution (革命), marking the start of a new era (时代). Today, we try to preserve (保存) historical sites because they are a valuable legacy (遗产) of mankind.
