In this second part of the series on how the living can benefit the dead, Yasir Qadhi continues a careful, evidence-based discussion rooted in the Qur’an, Sunnah, and classical scholarship.
The lecture begins by reaffirming what is unanimously agreed upon across all four Sunni schools of law:
the deceased benefit from their own ongoing deeds, and from the duʿāʾ and istighfār made for them by the living.
The focus then moves into areas where clear hadith evidence exists, but where later scholars differed in interpretation — beginning with charity (ṣadaqah) on behalf of the deceased. Multiple authentic narrations are cited, including the well-known example of Saʿd ibn ʿUbādah dedicating a water well for his mother, and explicit statements from the Prophet ﷺ confirming that such charity reaches the dead.
The lecture then turns to Hajj and ʿUmrah on behalf of others, especially the deceased or those permanently unable to travel. Several narrations are discussed, including the famous comparison made by the Prophet ﷺ between Hajj and repaying a debt, emphasizing that obligations owed to Allah deserve to be fulfilled.
A key scholarly tension is carefully explained:
most of the hadith evidence relates to fulfilling obligatory acts (farḍ), not voluntary worship. This distinction later shaped differences of opinion among jurists.
The well-known Shubrumah hadith is also examined, highlighting two important principles:
One must fulfill obligations for oneself before doing them for others
These acts are not limited to parents, but may extend to other relatives or individuals
The lecture concludes by outlining the next categories to be addressed in the series, including fasting on behalf of the deceased and sacrifice (uḍḥiyah), before transitioning into how the classical schools of fiqh interpreted all of this evidence.
This talk is not about speculation — it is about clarity, balance, and acting upon what is firmly established, so believers can help their loved ones in ways that are authentic, meaningful, and accepted.
