•The Armenian collection Tōnapatchaṛ: the recension of the school of Haghpat•
The Tōnapatchaṛ (Տօնապատճառ, literally “the causes of feast days” or “commentaries on feast days”) is a collection that has no equivalent in other ecclesiastical traditions. It has survived in many copies that may be grouped into the Kamrjadzor and Haghpat school recension branches. The Tōnapatchaṛ has long been considered merely a commentary on the Lectionary of the Armenian Church—an exegetical work intended for didactic purposes. By tracing the historical development of these recensions and their enrichment between the seventh and fourteenth centuries, I argue that, despite its exegetical character, the Tōnapatchaṛ also served polemical purposes, particularly by addressing the calendar differences between the non-Chalcedonian Armenian and the Chalcedonian Byzantine Churches. I will further discuss the intensification of the polemical function of the Haghpat school recensions in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, resulting from the attempts at ecclesiastical union between the Byzantine and Armenian Churches initiated by Emperor Manuel I Komnenos (1143–1180) and Catholicos Nersēs Shnorhali (the Gracious, 1166–1173). These efforts generated theological debates concerning the Dominical feasts and their precise days of celebration.
