A common issue with older engines is worn valve stem seals causing smoking. Worn seals allow too much oil to drain down the valve stem, result, smoke and excessive oil consumption.
If you are experiencing this issue, replacing the seals is pretty simple and cheap (this repair cost me about 30 dollars).
You also do not need any expensive tools to carry this out.
Of course you should always also do a compression check to diagnose worn rings (another cause of oil consumption).
