Ruben Nieto, a painter based in the United States, has exhibited his work both in the US and internationally. During his art studies in the 1990s, he studied the history of pre-Hispanic cultures in Mesoamerica and became fascinated by their art, particularly Mayan and Aztec. He familiarized himself with their glyphs and pictograms and began to delve deeper into them. He decided to incorporate into his paintings those that attracted him and resonated with him most, appropriating and transforming them. He creates and continues to develop his own dictionary of glyphs and pictograms, which he uses to create highly personal and deeply rooted narratives. Cy Twombly, Robert Motherwell, William Turner, and Pablo Picasso are among his major influences. His paintings are inspired by pre-Hispanic imagery and motifs of the past, recreated in a language of his own and placed in an environment energized by abstract expressionism and pop art.
