The Hachinohe Enburi is a traditional local dance performance expressing prayers for a good harvest, with over 800 years of history and the heartfelt wishes of the people woven into it. It has been designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The name "Enburi" is said to derive from a farming tool called "eburi" (or "iburi/yusaburi") used to flatten the ground. This ritual is meant to wake up the gods of the fields and imbue the earth with the spirits of the people.
The dancers, called Tayu, wear large, brilliantly decorated eboshi hats shaped like horses’ heads. The most distinctive feature of the Enburi is these unique hats and the dramatic way the dancers shake their heads in wide arcs. The dance symbolizes the entire process of rice cultivation, from sowing seeds to planting seedlings.
Between the dances of the Tayu, adorable Shukufukumai dances performed by children delight the audience.
