Kīlauea’s Episodic Eruption Reaches One-Year Mark

Over the past year, the U.S. Geological Survey documented dozens of eruptive episodes, many featuring dramatic lava fountains that reshaped the crater floor and built new volcanic features.

Despite the intensity of some episodes, all activity remained confined to the summit area, with no direct impacts to nearby communities. Scientists say the eruption provided valuable insight into how magma accumulates and is released beneath Kīlauea, improving eruption forecasting and hazard assessment. While the volcano is currently in a pause, USGS officials note that future eruptive episodes remain possible as magma continues to recharge beneath the summit.
