This lecture is started from the discussion of classical theories like Wein's Radiation Law and Rayleigh-Jeans radiation law to explain the black body radiation spectra. Rayleigh-Jeans law was based on two assumptions and one is standing electromagnetic waves are inside the cavity and second is the average total energy of a standing wave is KT. These both assumptions were based on the electromagnetic theory and Thermodynamics. But both classical laws were failed to completely explained the black body radiation spectrum. The Wein radiation law was only successful to the lower wavelength or higher frequency region whereas Rayleigh-Jeans law were successful to only higher wavelength or lower frequency region of spectrum.
Plank identify the mistake in total average energy of the electromagnetic waves. He proposed a very surprising idea of discrete energy transfer from atomic oscillators to electromagnetic waves. This was just the opposite as continuous energy transfer in classical physics. Planck also reached to the conclusion that average total energy must be a function of frequency as opposite in the case of classical physics KT a constant for all waves. Planck derived average energy formula for a standing wave and put in the formula of energy radiation. He got the desired results for what he was trying for i.e. his proposed formula showed a very good resemblance with experimental data. This huge success of Planck's theory open a whole new gates for amazing physics quantum mechanics. Planck was awarded Noble Prize of physics in 1918 for his groundbreaking breakthrough.
